Search Companies House
Go to gov.uk/get-information-about-a-company. Search the exact company name. Confirm the registered address, company number, and director names match what the company is telling you. Takes two minutes and tells you everything.
Find a Real Human Being
Can you speak to a named person directly, by phone or video call, before signing anything? A legitimate publishing company will welcome a conversation. A company that can only communicate via chat or email and deflects requests for a call is telling you something.
Ask for Author References
Request the names and contact details of authors the company has published. Look up those books. Do they exist? Can you find them on Amazon, in bookshops, or in library catalogues? Ask to speak to one of those authors directly.
Read the Contract, All of It
Request the full publishing agreement before any payment changes hands. Read the rights clauses, the royalty terms, the reversion clauses, the fees, and the termination conditions. If anything is unclear, ask for plain-English clarification. If they refuse, you have your answer.
Search the Name Carefully
Some companies deliberately choose names that mimic well-known publishers. Search the exact name plus “reviews” and “complaints.” Check Trustpilot, Google Reviews, and author community forums like the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) watchdog list.
